CARES Act (COVID-19 Stimulus Bill) Frequently Asked Questions

Federal Stimulus

The Federal CARES Act authorizes stimulus payments directly to U.S. taxpayers.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance

Unemployment benefits have been enhanced. People who are unemployed due to the coronavirus, including self-employed people like Uber and Lyft drivers, personal trainers, and construction workers, will get an extra $600 per week for up to four months on top of their state unemployment benefits. Also, state unemployment benefits have been extended from 26 weeks to 39 weeks.

Many businesses impacted by the coronavirus will be receiving employment tax credits for retaining their workers, which means fewer people will lose their jobs. Also, small businesses with 500 or fewer employees may be able to obtain government loans to retain or rehire workers. If you have been laid off or furloughed, you may want to contact your employer about possibly returning to work.
