As part of our freeze food and save money series we’re sharing how to freeze and refrigerate poultry. Chicken and turkey are on sale all the time, and if you know how to freeze them, you can save some serious cash.

How Long Can You Freeze Chicken?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says if your freezer is kept at a temperature of 0 °F or lower, you could technically freeze your chicken forever. You should keep in mind that over time frozen foods do lose quality, flavor and texture. If you’re going to cook chicken that’s been in the freezer that’s over nine months old, you should consider cooking it and using the meat in a casserole or soup.

How Long Does Cooked Chicken or Turkey Last in the Freezer?

If you want to freeze your chicken or turkey leftovers, you’ll need to store it in a heavy duty freezer bag or an airtight container. Plain cooked chicken or turkey lasts in the freezer four months. Covered in broth or gravy your poultry will last six months.

How Long Is Raw Chicken or Turkey Good in the Fridge?

If you thaw chicken in your freezer, it can last a few days before you need to cook it. Thawing your chicken in cold water or the microwave needs to be cooked immediately.

Can You Freeze Chicken Salad?

Nope. Mayonnaise and egg based salads are not meant for the freezer.

Should I Wash Raw Chicken?

Raw chicken should never be rinsed because splashing water will spread Campylobacter bacteria on your hands, clothing, sink and work surface. Campylobacter causes food poisoning and you wouldn’t want that.
